Battleship launches on consoles today

Activision's take on the classic board game turned movie makes its way out into the retail sea today.

“With numerous gaming platforms available today, it is important to showcase BATTLESHIP on many different levels,” said Mark Blecher, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Digital Media and Marketing at Hasbro.  The new BATTLESHIP is the perfect medley that both strategic and action-junkie gamers will fall in love with.”
The movie (and the game) is radically different from the naval warfare board game on which it's based. The new Battleship sees a traditional Navy fleet taking on an advanced alien race that can erect force domes to contain and eliminate threats.

Battleship takes place inside one of these domes- this one cast over the Hawaiian islands. The Xbox and PS3 editions are an interesting mix of FPS action and real time strategic gameplay (and actually look pretty cool), while the portable (and Wii) versions sport a straight-up RTS flavor.

I have to say, the console versions in particular look pretty interesting for a licensed game. We've all come to not expect too much from those, but this looks like it might have more going on than usual. Battleship is available now for the Xbox 360, PS3, DS, 3DS, and Wii.
