Inhale Your Fruit with Kirby

Nintendo's very own pink puffball, Kirby, has a brand new 3DS DS title about to debut called Mass attack. In the game, Kirby can not only employ his usual method of bad guy elimination (eating them) but he can also multiply himself up to ten times by chomping (natch) on fruit.

While you're working on digesting that disturbing image, why not digest something else? Nintendo is celebrating the launch of the newest entry in the series with a roving snack truck. The iced treat wagon will be making appearances in Huston, San Francisco, and right here in NYC.

The New York meet will, of course, take place in Rockefeller Center at the Nintendo Flagship Store. There you'll be able to get some hands on time with Mass Attack and enjoy some comped frozen fruit treats. Eating the fruit bars will, in all likelihood, not allow you to clone yourself in any way though.

Just thought that was worth mentioning.

Nintendo Expects the 3DS to Sell Well

Shocking huh?

Nintendo says they're looking for sales in the 4.5 to 5 million unit range for year one of the new 3D portable. That should be extremely doable considering they've got three quarters of 2011 left, post launch, in which to hit that goal.

The European theater alone will see 900,000 3DS' hit the retail shelves in the first three weeks of release. If it's adoption rate is going to be anything like the success that the original DS has enjoyed, that may not be enough.

3DS Available March 27th for $249.99

Nintendo's early morning US and European press conferences delivered the info everybody wanted about their three-dimensional handheld. It's pretty much as speculated on the date (at least the date range) and price, so nobody should be too surprised about anything there. But there were some little bits & bytes dropped that further flesh out the console's functionality. More about all of that after the break-

Oh by the way- Amazon.com is taking pre-orders.

3DS Games Region Locked?

Well here's something that would come as a shock to anyone who's into portable games- Nintendo's upcoming 3DS might be region locked. This basically means that a game sold at retail in the US wouldn't be able to run on a Japanese version of the hardware.

It's a practice that used to be commonplace but has now become obsolete, for all intents and purposes. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen but we'll update all of you who are thinking about importing a Japanese unit (since it launches a bit ahead of the American one) if we get anything further.

Nintendo's Upcoming Gold Mine Gets Official

The 3DS is looking great, Nintendo had a press conference yesterday that outlined their plans as far as the Japanese launch goes and so far it's looking like a fantastic assortment of games and a very nice little piece of hardware.

First things first, the 3DS has no North American or European release date yet- the land of the rising sun will see it on March 11th 2011. Yep, that's right- no 3DS for you this Holiday Season. Personally (and I know a lot of people think I'm nuts) I'm still predicting a global launch for the console. If not day and date with the Asian release, then only a few days or maybe a week after for the rest of the markets.

I just don't see them doing this kind of old school japan first thing with the 3DS, there's way to much money to be made- and way too big of an impression to be made. So I don't see it, could easily be wrong since Nintendo has a history of being a little unchanging in their thinking (like with HD), but I don't think so.

Anyway, after the break you'll see some new Resident Evil screens that you may not have seen before and some you definitely haven't seen before as Capcom announces a second RE for the 3D portable.

Some little flickers:
  • Japanese price tag? 250 USD
  • There will be a transfer feature allowing you to move over DLC from your DSi to the 3DS
  • There's a Virtual Console. Done cheering yet? It'll feature GameBoy and GameBoy Color games to start, but I have to imagine they'll expand that. Game Gear games anyone?

So when is the 3DS going to be out anyway?

Not even Reggie Fils-Aime knows for sure. On the Jimmy Fallon program last Friday, Reggie announced the the console wouldn't be available until next year here in the US. This after the company itself set a fiscal 2011 launch window, which basically means 'before the end of March 2011' Now it looks like that might not be se certain.

Nintendo of Japan, who apparently has a better handle on things, has discounted that statement and says that we might not have quite that long to wait, calling Fils-Aime "mistaken" -according to Kotaku.com sources.

In my mind, the whole thing makes a lot more sense as a global launch rather than a regional one. It's true that Nintendo has always been big on releasing first in it's home country of Japan, but I think that the landscape has changed so much that that kind of thinking just doesn't fit any more. North America is every bit the power in the video game industry that Japan is at this point- and you can make the case that Europe is right up there as well. If this was a simple game launch, I could see Japan first- but a new console is such a big deal... there's an impact that could be made with a global drop that would be a shame to miss out on.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking but if they have the hardware to cover it, (granted that might be a big 'if') then global is clearly the way to go. Nintendo's money printers would be in overdrive.

More to come-
