It's true, a video about the shooting of the commercial for the newest Zumba Kinect title, Fitness Rush, doesn't really sound like a good time. Now what if I told you that there were an astonishing 68 cameras used in the filming?

Avatar Kinect & Kinect Enhansed Movie Viewing Announced at CES

Microsoft's Kinect is gangbusters at retail and now it's getting a little bit of new functionality-

Kinect Transforms Entertainment in the Living Room
Kinect is a prime example of how natural user interface (NUI) is transforming gaming by making it more social and approachable than anyone ever thought was possible, but it’s just the beginning, Dennis said. Several CES announcements showed how Microsoft will take Kinect’s controller-free experience beyond gaming and into entertainment throughout the year. This spring, for example, Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers will be able to use Kinect to control Netflix on Xbox LIVE. Viewers will be able to pause, rewind, and fast-forward streaming movies with only their voice or gestures.
The company also announced that Hulu Plus will be coming to Xbox LIVE as a Kinect-enabled experience this spring. As with Netflix, subscribers will be able to use controller-free motion and voice capabilities to instantly watch full-screen popular TV shows anytime in HD.
Also at CES, the Xbox team introduced a new social experience called Avatar Kinect that will use Kinect’s camera and sensor to bring a player’s avatar to life. It leverages Kinect’s facial recognition technology to let a person control their avatar’s movements and expressions; when they smile, frown, nod and speak, the avatar will do the same, Dennis said.
With Avatar Kinect, a player can invite up to seven friends to join them in one of 15 imaginative virtual environments. One of those worlds is a performance stage, where friends can record their performance and share with friends.
Ooooh, voice control for Netflix and Hulu is a great idea.

Not really sold on the Avatar Kinect feature set though. We've already seen with Sony's Playstation Home (although it's a little bit of a different animal), that kind of thing isn't really all it's cracked up to be- at least not yet.

It sounds good, but 'on paper' doesn't always translate all that great to actual usability.

Kinect Connects With Consumers

Wow, that was a bad one even for me.

Microsoft's new Kinect sensor is a hit with shoppers- The motion controller led to an almost doubling in console sales in some territories, already selling over one million units since it launched just a week ago. Impressive... I was just at Best Buy this afternoon and saw a few stand alone Kinect's stacked up but only one console bundle- and it was snapped up by a family right in front of me.

It seems like the sensor really will be a system seller this Holiday season (as I predicted). Those analysts that said the PS3 would catch the Xbox 360 this year might want to recheck their numbers.

As much as I like the Move, well, apparently it's no Kinect.

Kinect Launches Today

Are you getting one?

If you've read our newest feature from Celebrity & entertainment magazine, then you know my take on the device already. Basically, Kinect has a tremendous up side and it's potential is almost unlimited. Truely, it's a groundbreaking piece of technology that's probably going to be integrated into quite a few consumer electronic items in the years to come.

But there is a down side- right now we're not talking about general entertainment devices. The games are the thing and the games... well lets say they're a little lacking. Much like the PS Move from last month, Kinect has a super weak launch lineup that's mostly shovelware. Now next year there will actually be some things that might make the 'must play' list, a Panzer Dragoon-like shooter and a follow-up to Steel Battalion are the two that have already made my most wanted, but right now it's very difficult to recommend Kinect to anyone other than folks who just like to have the newest tech toy.

And if that's you, by all means- enjoy. I'll be right there along side you. But for the rest of the reading audience, I'd wait. The stuff you really are going to want to play is at least a quarter or two away.

Kinect Bundles and Pricing Now Official

What you see above is the 4GB Kinect Bundle. It includes one of the new 4gig 360's (that will also go on sale all by themselves next month at the $199 price point), Kinect Adventures, and of course the Kinect unit itself. Pretty nice bundle deal- goes on sale this November the 4th for the price of $299 American.

Some more details about Kinect and the new 360 unit:
  • The games will run $49.99ea
  • Kinectimals, Kinect Sports, and Kinect Joyride will all be available at launch
  • The stand-alone Kinect unit will retail for $149.99 and will include Kinect Adventures
  • Both sku's (bundle and regular pack) launch on November 4th
  • No Bundle deal right now featuring the new 250GB 360, only the 4GB
  • The new console will have an expansion bay for a Hard Drive but there are no details on that right now *just a note on that- if you were to use a flash drive, then you really wouldn't need a hard drive anyway. You could easily make this have 20gigs of storage if you include the onboard 4GB's.
My thoughts on all this after the break. I'm starting to feel a little meh about it.
