Gameplay Footage of PSVita's Resistance: Burning Retribution

The PSVita is already looking like it's going to be quite the little juggernaut on the portable scene. It's certainly got the hardware down, and the software that's been unveiled this week at the Gamescom show is shaping up to be equally impressive. Take Resistance: Burning Retribution for example.

When you watch the PS Blog's look at RBR below, you will be surprised- I can almost guarantee it -by some of the uses for the PSV's touch screen. Really, really smart stuff- watch... and be amazed!!1!

First NGP Hands On Report Surfaces

It's really strange in it's wording, but I'm going to attribute that to English as a second language errors. Check it out here.

Playstation Phone outed

The Playstation Phone is something that's been rumored for a while- a loooong while. In fact, I remember talking about a PSPhone since before the iPhone was a glimmer in Steve Jobs' eye.

So now it looks like there actually is a Playstation Phone. Shots have surfaced, some details are out, blah, blah, blah... The problem is, especially with the leaked info of the PSP2, we no longer need a Playstation Phone. Who would be the market for this thing? People who miss their N-Gage? Sony fanboys? Even then, Sony has been the first one lately to say how inferior phones are for gaming.

I don't know, it makes no sense to me, but maybe somebody out there doesn't like iOS, Android, or Blackberry, or any of the thousand other phones and phone OS' out there- and maybe they don't want a PSP2, or even a 3DS. Maybe that's the market?

More on Ars.

Sony Announces 'Playstation Rewards'

Right now it's in Beta and only available to Advisory Panel members and PSPlus subscribers, but this is exactly what it sounds like- a rewards/loyalty program similar to club.nintendo. There's avatars and themes as well as a trip to the CES to be had right now so it's getting off on the right foot- presumably there'll be a lot more variety in the options to pick as your said rewards when it goes into final release but it looks pretty cool right now.

Plus just got a lot more enticing I'll tell you that...

E3 '10 -- Sony

So what was Sony showing off at it's e3 pressy?

How about a brand new Twisted Metal? It was actually the last thing they showed but I think it's the first on everybody's minds- the graphics actually aren't all the impressive but I'm going to guess that's because it's still go a little to go in development world.

You can check out the trailer here.

Sony also played up the Move- no surprise there -as well as talking about the new inFAMOUS, Little BIG Planet 2, Portal 2 (!), and the new Sly Cooper Collection (think GoW collection, but with no new game coming behind it). They also intro'd Playstation Plus- which is the long dreaded PSN pay service. If you're not looking to get 'inside stuff' though, don't sweat it- you'll do just fine without Plus.

Read on for the official word and a bunch of other stuff. No PSP2 though : (

PS3 e3 meetup in LaLa Land

If'n you be goin' ta e3, ye might be wantin' ta go to the PS Blog meetup. Arr.

I don't really know where the pirate talk came from there but I guess that's really neither here nor there... Anyway- there will be a pretty nice little meet n' greet on June 13th (which is a Sunday) at Ciudad which is located at 445 S Figueroa St. in Los Angeles.

They're going to have some new games on display, but there's also going to be food and prizes will be given out- but far and away the best part will be that the first 150 people to show up will get passes to the Sony e3 press conference the following Tuesday!

Pretty sweet overall.

Killzone 3 interview fresh from the reveal

From what I've seen of the game it looks great- the 3D aspect is negligible as far as I'm concerned but the graphics look sharp and the jetpacks (while definitely not an innovation at this point) I think will be a lot of fun.

More excited for e3.

PS3 market share increases for 2010

Good news for Sony as VGChartz is reporting that the Playstation company's share of the global video game pie has risen to 31%. This brings it ever closer to the Xbox 360's numbers as well as, surprisingly, the Nintendo Wii.

The source, David Mercer of Strategy Analytics, attributes the change to Sony's intro of the PS3 'slim' (and the accompanying price drop) last fall, the new 'Kevin Butler' ad campaign, and an improved lineup of software.

He also tries to have his cake and eat it too as he points out that, although he expects sales to be relatively steady throughout the year, this might be a temporary surge and sees a rebound for Microsoft when 'Natal' launches this fall.

I really think that these new motion controllers- the Playstation Move and 'Natal', will have little to no impact on anything. I never thought much of the Move and I believe Natal will be meaningless at the rumored $149.99 price point. If natal comes in at a sub-100 level, I think it has promise.

It's with that in mind that I'll say- it really just comes down to software. The games are the thing. Period. That's why this year started out so great for Sony. The fall though, is set up to be dominated by blockbusters for the 360 such as Halo Reach and Fable 3.

Should be an interesting year all around. Very excited for e3.

Little big Planet details... in FAQ form

Some great info here for LBP fans who are, no doubt, eagerly awaiting the second game in the Playstation exclusive series. Some stand-out info:

  • Brand new 50 level story mode
  • All costume DLC from LBP 1 is compatible with part 2
  • The Marvel comics theme pack is still floating around out there somewhere- we may see it
  • Custom voices (!)
  • 'Sackbots', NPC Sackboys that can be used in level making, can be bad guys

Read on for the whole list of known stuff. Good all around.

PSP2 at E3 - unconfirmed! speculated!

Maybe is the keyword here so please- grain of salt.

Read the article on Edge. It does make for a very 'read between the lines' type thing. Just do me the favor of not getting too excited.

Finally... the God of War has come back... to the PSP

Sony has announced a sequel to it's PSP only GoW prequel, Chains of Olympus, and it's God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

So it's a sequel to a prequel that's still a prequel. This is like Lucas doing the classic Star Wars films at the same time as he was pumping out the crappy new Star Wars movies.

Pics and description after the break...

UMD for DLC initiative for the PSP Go

Sony has announced a plan to provide digital copies of UMD's already owned by folks who want to upgrade to a Go over their current model PSP, whichever one that may be. (I still have a 1000)

Good idea. My collection of UMD's is a big blockade when it comes to me personally switching over to a Go. The thought of buying a title over again isn't really that appealing.

Sony E3 Press Briefing

Sony's E3 briefing was a little bit compromised by the plethora of press leaks that led up to it. They didn't have too many surprises as a result, still- they did have a couple of things up their collective sleeves.

5) PSP exclusive games

Sony showed off an all new Resident Evil, Metal Gear Peacewalker (sequel to the PS2's MGS3), Soul Calibur, and a really impressive looking Little Big Planet port. Their PSP lineup was supposed to get a shot in the arm this year. So far it's been a letdown but these games are a great step in the right direction- good stuff all around.

4) PS3 Exclusive games

Uncharted 2 looks absolutely fantastic, Final Fantasy 14 was teased and a montage was shown with a bunch of mostly non-exclusive games in it. Overall I wasn't impressed with the PS3 stuff (outside of Uncharted 2 and #3 on this list that is). It looks to me like Sony pushed out most of their exclusives for holiday '08 and for '09. There's just not that much left to show. MAG looked very forgettable.

3) God of War 3

The game looks great but there's not much I can really say about it. I should say that I'm not much of a fan in the first place and this looks to be exactly the same as the PS2/PSP versions -- but with incredible graphics of course. That's probably the reason that I'll pick it up when it comes out in March '10. Just to see the great look that it has.

My feelings aside though, if you like GoW and you haven't picked up a PS3 yet- well -I think you're gonna want to ASAP.

2) PSP Go

Just like it was leaked out to the press a few days ago- the PSP Go did make it's debut. It's smaller, sleeker, lighter (40% lighter than the PSP 1000!!), and has no UMD port. The PSP Go will be all download. It remains to be seen if this kind of thing is really going to take off with the gaming community at large, I myself am a fan of physical media. I like to actually have the disc, or UMD as the case may be. I think that's probably why Sony is going to be very cautious about all of this - all PSP games will still ship on UMD's, but they'll also be available for download on the same day. That way no one gets burned. The good old PSP 3000 will still be for sale as well. Smart moves in my book.

1) The 'PS3 Motion Controller'

Let me start by saying that this would have impressed me a whole lot more if I never saw Natal in action. I promise that that's the last thing I'll say about it.

*AHEM*

The PS3MC (I don't know what the hell to call it!) is a wand that works in conjunction with the PS Eye. Presumably you'll need the Eye to use the wand, maybe a bundle? It has a really cool feature that shows you on the TV with CGI weapons or sporting goods in hand in place of the wand. It looks a little dopey right now but the tech really isn't finished yet. It was a good move for Sony to at least give us all a hint of what's to come rather than just not showing anything. It's cool, it's new- it's got a long way to go yet.

This was a good briefing for Sony. They showed off a lot of new stuff, some that was a surprise some that wasn't. I would've really liked to have seen more in the way of PS3 exclusive stuff. That worries me a bit.

Ouch

It looks like the 'recession' is finally hitting the electronic world pretty hard. Namely, Sony.

It's disappointing because I thought Sony of all companies would stand fast against the crash. They're into so much that they seemed pretty safe. The biggest drop came out of their entertainment division. Eighteen percent down.

Damn Depress..uh..Recession.
