Boomphones go boom on your head

They're headphones! They're a boombox! Stop- you're both right!

So what does Google spend its billions on?

The internet search (and about a million other things) giant Google has a lot of cash in their vaults. Like, a lot. So what do they do with it all?

Dark Horse has a lot on it's ePlate

ePlate, if you're unfamiliar, is a payment system not unlike a credit card. It has a magnetic stripe and everything, but here's the difference- ePlate has a battery and is programable. For what you ask? For pretty much anything... take Dark Horse comics' new initiative.

Jawbone's Jambox 2.1 Update Released

Fan of the Jambox by Jawbone? The little bluetooth boombox that could already provides for an awesome sound experience, but now it just got a lil' bit better.

Update 2.1 is now live for MyTalk users and it provides for some pretty cool upgrades to the system. Although it isn't all that beefy, 2.1 provides a few new bells and whistles including an enhanced sound clarity feature that controls distortion and a LiveAudio option that, when switched on, will simulate live listening.

Full release with all the new stuff (but that is kind of all there is) post jump-

iCloud, iOS5, and More Revealed Tuesday

No word on whether or not there'll be any new hardware showing up, but Apple's WWDC keynote will show off some new software. iOS5, the new digital streaming service iCloud and the new upgrade for OSX- Lion -will all be present and accounted for.

One little interesting tidbit, the Apple presentation will end just thirty minutes before Microsoft's e3 keynote begins. A little one-upsmanship from the iDevice king towards their longtime competitor?

How long do you think it'll be before there's an Apple presence at e3?

Edit: Wow, sorry guys and gals- the headline should have read 'Tuesday' and not 'Tomorrow' If we got your hopes up, many apologies.

New nook Color Firmware Out Now

The latest firmware release for the Barnes & Noble ereader du jour, the nook color, is available for your downloading pleasure right this very minute.

What's new? Apps baby! Support for "Apps, games, music, and more!", as well as "Full featured email & fun social features", aaaand "Enhanced web with video" Woooo!

The very small catch is that you have to jack in to your PC or Mac to update your nook- the software package won't be available for application directly from your reader for an indeterminate (but short) time period. No word on just why that would be the case but so it be- for now at least.

More as we get it-

This Supaboy Has Nothing to do With Superman

Peripheral maker Hyperkin already produces portable units that run all kinds of classic software. There's a Genesis, there's an NES... and now there's a Super NES.

Back in the day, a portable SNES would have been heaven sent. Oh how all those car trips would have been soothed by the woop, woop of squished Goomba's- Even now though, has the dream really lost any luster of it's luster?

Even with a billion different emulators (all of them imperfect) and re-printings up the wazoo for the various portables and virtual consoles, the original carts still hold a special place in an old school gamers heart. That's just what the SupaBoy promises- and then some:
The SupaBoy will play original SNES cartridges on a built-in 3.5” LCD screen and is designed to emulate an original SNES controller including a D-pad and buttons on the front as well as right and left shoulder buttons. Hyperkin has even included two front loading ports that are compatible with full-size SNES controllers and video/audio out, allowing up to two players to play the SupaBoy on a regular TV screen. How supa’ cool is that!
Pretty supa actually- now to find that copy of Zombies Ate my Neighbors. It's around here someplace...

iPad 2 Dominates in the UK

Just a few short weeks after we reported that the launch may not even happen as scheduled, the iPad 2 is a smash hit in the British Isles. The tablet has reportedly sold out completely at the retail level, in fact the iPad's successor now has a four week waiting list for anyone who has yet to grab a unit.

Not to be forgotten here is that there's still a monstrous demand for iPad's in the US, which isn't going to help overseas markets any.

Edit: 'grab a unit' just sounds... not right, doesn't it?

UK iPad 2 Launch in Doubt

It was scheduled for the 25th, but now that isn't looking like such a sure thing.

MCV is reporting that the iPad 2 has had such a massive showing in the US (the first country to receive the sequel device) that the supply just isn't there to feed additional markets at this point. Also not helping matters are the ongoing disasters in Japan- several key components are manufactured there and delays are obviously, and understandably, mounting at this point.

Also pointed out in the MCV piece is that even though the deciding factors are new, an international iPad delay isn't. In 2010, there was such a call for the device from the States that global shipments were knocked way off schedule.

Just to give you a perspective on how well Apple is doing with their newest baby, the iPad 2 moved over 1 million units- in it's launch weekend alone.

iPad 2 is Official- Coming in Just a Little Over a Week

This morning's Apple press conference was hosted, despite a leave of absence, by Steve Jobs- and there was a good reason. The iPad 2 will be launching at retail in the US on March 11th, just 10 days from now- quite a bombshell as we had been hearing end of April at the earliest.

But there was a lot more than release dates announced-

Jobs announced a laundry list of new features and redesigns that make the successor to the most popular tablet of all time all that much better (and more irresistible):
  • 33% thinner - this may not sound like much but head over to Apple.com and feast your eyes. The iPad's heft affected it's use as an ereader and was always a drawback, regardless how minor, but that's well over now.
  • HDMI output with a $39.99 cable - that's not all that great considering HDMI cables are relatively cheap if you know where to look, but it is optional.
  • 9 times faster in the GPU department - games are going to really be something special.
  • The processor is a dual core A5 that has identical power drain as the A4. Awesome.
  • Gyroscope - they're soooo hot right now.
  • Dual cameras - the front one is for Facetime (obviously) and the rear is (also obviously) for photos and video recording (in HD)
There was also a nice little surprise in the pricing- it's going to be the same as it is already. That means $499 all the way up to $829- very nice.

With a March 11th release date Apple is no doubt taking quite a few by surprise, not the least of which is Nintendo whose 3DS launches only a short two weeks later on the 27th. But that's nothing next to what's about to happen in the European theatre- they're both dropping into retail at almost the same time. Decisions, decisions...

New MacBook Pros Have Arrived

The Apple store was down this afternoon for a good reason (well, some of you might think it's a good reason) - the new MacBook Pros are here. These bad boys come in three flavors: 13", 15", and 17" and they run $1199 on the low end up to $2400 maxed out.

Can you... resist!?!

No?

iPad 2 Coming Next Wednesday

Apple is having a press event next Wednesday- March 2nd -and it's all but confirmed that the iPad 2 will be officially shown off. We reported late last year that the Apple Corps should expect to be shelling out for a new 'Pad come early Spring of 2011 and it looks like that'll be the case- get ready.
